There are plenty of anime shows vying for the highly coveted ✨“My most favorite anime of all time”✨ spot but Land of the Lustrous, known to the anime community as Houseki no Kuni (宝石の国), might be it. Or not, it’s hard to choose just one.

And that although I belong to the vast majority of CGI haters among anime fans. But that’s because no Japanese studio has mastered CGI except Studio Orange.

Yes, there are the same guys who made Beastars, which I also reviewed for Focus:

As I mentioned in that review Beastars is Orange’s second best CGI work. Their top creations are the beautiful non-binary -in the anatomical sense- gems of Houseki.

Houseki no Kuni was released in 2017. Since then Orange have evolved their technique. While season 2 of Beastars might have slightly better CGI, it is the nature of Houseki that I think makes…
